Botox is the American brand name of the botulinum toxin and it was the first to be approved for aesthetic usage (in facial wrinkles), and because of this it is the most well known. There are, yet, the Dysport, from Sweden, and the Prosigne, from China.

In the United States, it was approved in 2002 by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for cosmetic use and in 2004 for hyperidrosis, being the only brand of type A Botulinum toxin approved for this end, in that country.

In Brazil, the brand name BOTOX ® was approved in 1992 for therapeutic usages and, in 2000, for the treatment of wrinkles and axillari (underarm sweating) and plantar hyperidrosis. There are also the brand names Dysport, from Sweden, and Prosigne, from Israel. Although, for having been the first approved, BOTOX® became very popular, and synonymous with the procedure.

It is applied in minute doses to decrease the capacity of contraction of facial muscles.
